But it is useful to have a list of roles, as it helps makes clear what kind of help we need…
-
Participant is why we organize this hackathon!
-
Event MC helps keep the event going. (@Boonjira Angsumalee, @Tino Thamjarat)
- For example, speaking in opening and closing sessions.
- Making important announcements.
-
Technical and general mentor helps participants. (@Chun Rapeepat, @Phoomparin Mano, @Wiput Pootong, @Phumrapee Limpianchop)
- Providing technical and general support to participants with their projects.
- General support including ideas, design, UX, product, etc.
- Providing optional workshop for participants.
- Participants in StupidHackTH2 suggested that we provide workshops, such as how to collaborate in hackathon (e.g. Git, etc).
- In StupidHackTH1 we also planned to offer optional workshops such as “Design Thinking Sprint: 2 Hours workshop,” “GitHub 101,” and “Real World Coding 101.”
- Maybe building a project of their own as well!
- In StupidHackTH2, the staffs team also worked on and presented their own projects.
-
Reception handles registration and check-in. (@Pankamol Srikaew)
-
Facilitator and improvisers provides general help. (@Unnawut L.)
- Basically, ensuring participants (and staffs) have a great time.
- If you don’t know how you can help, but wants to help and enjoy the hackathon, this role may be suitable!
- For example, in our 1st Stupid Hackathon, our facilitators went to nearby Tesco Lotus, comes back and make sandwiches for participants in the morning!
- Improvisation and spontaneity is encouraged over following a plan.
- If we try to come up with an upfront plan to stick with, there’s a lot of uncertainty. e.g. “What if participants don’t want a workshop?” “What if participants don’t like the meal?”
- Reacting to the needs of participants can result in better and more memorable experience.
- To quote a famous quote: It's not the plan; it's the planning. “In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.”
-
Venue preparer prepares the venue and makes sure that things needed at the venue are available, such as: (@Unnawut L.)
- Signboards for sponsors
- Power outlets
- Pencil, paper, whiteboards, if applicable
- Making sure projectors and sound system works
- Backdrops — do we even need that??
-
Master of food ceremony makes sure everyone don’t starve. (@Tino Thamjarat, @Boonjira Angsumalee)
- This doesn’t necessarily mean planning all the meals upfront — just be prepared to be able to serve meals!
- Some meals may be prepared upfront. Some can be ordered or even bought and cooked on the spot. For some meals we can go out and have Dimsum.js at 2 a.m.
-
Swag preparer prepares to give participants things they can bring home such as: (@Sittiwat Jirajaroenyingsuk)
- T-shirts (if budget allows)
- Name tags
- Prizes (although some prizes can be ordered after the event, or on the spot!) (Mike Phulsuksombati)
-
Photographer shoots beautiful photos! (@Sittiwat Jirajaroenyingsuk, Witchakorn Saphangphol)
- Taking photos of memorable moments.
- Maybe also retouching these photos.
